TV PROGRAMMING DEPARTMENT INTERNSHIP

GENERAL SUMMARY:  The Programming Intern will assist the Programming Department at LA 18 KSCI-TV with programming our Mandarin-language digital channel (18.8).  This includes contracting, tracking, viewing, summarizing, scheduling, archiving, labeling, and dubbing Mandarin-language programs for broadcast.  The Programming Department is the center of information for the television station, so the intern will have the opportunity to interact with all departments. 

This is an exciting opportunity to learn the core aspects of television programming in the largest Asian television station in the U.S.

This internship provides a hands-on learning experience for the student who is interested in broadcasting, television programming, the Mandarin language and Chinese culture, and translation. 

Must be proficient in Mandarin Chinese and English, detail-oriented, and have good computer skills, especially strong experience with Excel.  

General Internship Requirements:
To qualify as an intern, a student must be:
 A registered student at an accredited college or university.
 Eligible to earn academic credit for the internship and able to provide credit documentation from school.
 Enrolled in a related course of study.
 Preferably a third or fourth year student.

General Internship Information:
Internships may not exceed one academic quarter or semester.  A minimum of 15 hours per week is required.  Office hours are 9 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday.   

Internships are non-paid.

KOREAN NEWS REPORTER/WRITER
Job Opening

GENERAL SUMMARY:  The News Reporter is responsible for producing daily stories for use on LA 18’s Prime News broadcast.The News Reporter will also be responsible for translating and writing news stories; scheduling and conducting field interviews; editing, and voicing-over reports for air.  

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Under the direction of the Supervising Producer, the News Reporter selects news stories to translate, write, edit and record voiceover. 
2. Produces spot-news or feature reports from field shoots and/or news feeds.  Includes scheduling and conducting interviews, editing video and voicing the final report.   
3. Researches topics and interviewees.  Prepares a list of questions and points of discussion for guest interviews. 
4. Submits final stories/reports to Supervising Producer for review and possible revision by deadline.
5. Performs miscellaneous duties as needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Fluency (written & spoken) in Korean is required, as well as accurate and speedy translation skills.  English language ability preferred but not required.
2. Ability to accurately and quickly type in Korean.
3. Ability to edit using non-linear editing systems preferred.
4. Ability to use or willingness to learn how to use news technologies including digital newsroom applications such as ENPS and non-linear editing systems.
5. Ability to use a mini-DV video is preferred but not required.
6. Ability to present a professional on-air appearance, including good articulation and correct pronunciation.
7. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime and on-call duty.
8. Knowledge of local Korean community and issues preferred.
9. Ability to represent the station and attend various community events.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
B.A. Degree or higher in related field is required.  A minimum of two years experience in writing/translating/reporting/ broadcast news in Korean is strongly preferred.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Work schedule varies.  Normal hours are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, NEWS & EDITORIAL CONTENT

GENERAL SUMMARY:  LA 18 is the premiere Asian-language television station in the United States broadcasting throughout Southern California.  LA 18 is a full-power, must-carry station available to 6.2 million TV households in the Los Angeles market.  LA 18 is seeking a creative, high-energy Executive Producer, News and Editorial Content to oversee the station’s original content programs.  This is a hands-on role that oversees editorial production for the station’s news, talk shows and entertainment programs in Korean, Chinese, Filipino and Vietnamese languages.  This is an ideal position for someone who is passionate about television, story-telling and serving the largest Asian American community in the United States.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Oversee editorial operations for all language services across all media platforms.
2. Leverage digital news gathering technology to design, develop and implement new programs and segments.
3. Manage Community Relations team to integrate Asian community leaders and organizations into the station’s editorial content matrix.
4. Represent LA18 at community events.
5. Work closely with sales and promotion departments for content integration opportunities.
6. Serve as field producer for major news and promotional events.  Some video shooting may also be required.
7. Develop new online channels for content distribution that leverage social and online media.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
1. Must have extensive knowledge of television and new media content production.
2. Must have a solid journalistic background and knowledge of AP editorial standards.  Work experience at major Asian and international broadcasters preferred.
3. Must have experience working and managing in a diverse, pan-Asian environment.
4. Knowledge/fluency of Asian-languages preferred but not required.
5. Basic video production skills including non-linear editing and videography required.
6. Understanding of the latest trends in both U.S. and Asian broadcasting/media essential.
7. Must be able to work effectively under tight deadlines in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual environment.
8. Prior management experience required, preferably at a major media organization in either the United States or in Asia.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
7-10 years of experience in television production and news required.  Experience in Asia at a major national or international network strongly preferred.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Hours may vary.  Normal office hours are Monday – Friday, 9 am to 6 pm.  This is an on-call position where weekends, late nights and early morning call-times may be necessary.

STUDIO TECHNICIAN

GENERAL SUMMARY:  LA 18 is the premiere Asian language TV station in the United States broadcasting throughout Southern California.  The employment opportunity available in its production department does not require knowledge of any Asian language.  The Studio Technician will operate various studio equipment during live and taped broadcasts under the direction of the Technical Director.  This may include operation of audio board, camera, Chyron and Deko character generator, Zodiac switcher, tape machines & Grass Valley server-based playback system, AVID, Grass Valley Edit and Adobe Photoshop, as well as basic studio lighting duties and stage set-up.  This is a dynamic position ideally suited for an individual who loves to work in a fast-paced multimedia environment, is looking to learn new television production skills as well as develop existing ones.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Operate equipment as assigned, such as camera, tape machines, playback server, Type Deko graphics, Zodiac switcher, audio board, AVID and Adobe Photoshop, etc., at the direction of the Technical Director and/or Production Manager.
2. Prepare the microphones and all mic cables for use by talent and guests.  Patch all audio connections and reconfigure audio board and system for each show.  Provide and test all talent mics.
3. Prepare and check graphics before air.
4. Prepare set for show.  Includes adding/removing sets, props and backdrops.
5. Adjust studio lighting as needed.  Act as liaison with Lighting Director.
6. Perform miscellaneous duties as needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
1. Ability to follow directions and effectively work as a team member.
2. Basic skills in Chyron and Deko graphics, AVID or Final Cut, Adobe Photoshop and other broadcast technical equipment required. 
3. Knowledge of Adobe After Effects preferred but not required.
4. Experience working in a live television control room environment.
5. Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.
6. Ability to work well in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of two years experience as a television Studio Technician is required, with an emphasis on live television production experience.  Experience operating field and studio camera required.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Hours may vary.  The studio operates Monday through Friday from 4 am to 9 pm, and sometimes on the weekends.

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER / PRODUCTION MANAGER

SUMMARY:  The EP / Production Manager will oversee all production-related responsibilities for the company including, but not limited to, daily program production, sales & promotional production, special events and outside studio rentals.  The EP / Prod Mgr will manage the production teams in both the studio and post production departments.  Additionally, this role will be responsible for equipment management as well as working with all show producers to assist and guide production elements.   

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

STUDIO PRODUCTION
• Manage all daily studio operations including crew staffing, equipment maintenance and program production work flow.
• Quality control accountability for all shows produced by the KSCI studio production on company premises.
• Coordinate all show production with individual producers.
• Manage daily studio scheduling system among post, sales and editorial production teams.
• Work closely with Engineering department to promptly report and resolve all technical issues.
• Serve as the exclusive contact for interaction with CNN for live shots and feed coordination. 
• Work as TD or other studio production role for a part of each day (specific time allocation to be determined).

POST PRODUCTION
• Direct management responsibility for Post Production Producer.
• Coordinate daily with Post Production Producer on production schedule and resolve scheduling conflicts as they arise.
• Quality control accountability for all content produced or post produced by the Post Production team including, but not limited to, commercials, interstitials, full-programs (18.8 content) and graphic design.

SALES PRODUCTION
• Serve as production adviser to Account Executives and clients to serve their production needs.
• Accompany Account Executives on request to sales calls when production expertise is required.
• Work closely with Vice President of Sales and Vice President of Research to ensure that all sales production needs are being met in a timely and professional manner.
• Serve as field producer on location-based commercial shoots when necessary.
• Work closely with Vice President of Sales to ensure that all sales Production Requests are filled out properly so as to properly fulfill client demands, and to attend sales meetings to facilitate communication.

FIELD PRODUCTION
• Responsible for all cameras, lights, mics and other production equipment used for commercial or post production needs.  Keep detailed sign out sheet for each piece of equipment used. 
• Responsible for scheduling and proper maintenance of LiveU pack.
• Maintain list of qualified freelance production personnel to be available when needed by either editorial or post production departments.
• Write letters of accreditation when required for field crews to access key events.

WEB VIDEO UPLOADING
• Work closely with Filipino production team to ensure that all requested videos are uploaded to
www.youtube.com/kababayanla18.  The EP / Production Manager will be responsible for assigning a member of the studio production team to edit/encode and upload the videos.
• Upload videos as requested by editorial and programming departments to requested social media websites (Halo Halo on My Space/Tsou LA on You Tube/etc…)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Must be knowledgeable and skilled in television studio management, news production, and post production.
2. Must be able to edit well on non-linear editing system, preferably Avid.
3. Technical Director capability needed, including switching, audio and familiarity with ENG equipment (including LiveU).
4. Must have superior communication skills, and be able to work effectively in a fast-paced broadcast environment with a multi-cultural and multi-lingual work force.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
B.A. degree in TV Production or other related field is required.  
A minimum of five years experience as Production Manager at a broadcast or television production facility is required.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Normal hours are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  Additional hours required on occasion.
